The good news is that gum disease can be treated and prevented. Today, there are numerous aids available to help us including power toothbrushes, toothpastes, rinses and even prescription medications.

Dr. Nack and his team will perform a thorough periodontal examination at your initial appointment and during your hygiene visits to assure that you are in good health. If signs or symptoms of periodontal disease are discovered, he and his team will work diligently along with you to find an effective solution.

Gum disease has also been discovered to affect a lot more than just gums. It has been implicated as causative factor in heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pre-mature births, and low birth weight babies. It is not just an infection of the gums, but the jawbones surrounding the teeth as well. The bacteria, and chemical by-products of your bodies attempt to fight the bacteria, can enter the blood stream and cause serious problems in distant parts of the body.

In order to protect yourself from this destructive disease, it is critical to have your teeth professionally cleaned, and a thorough examination performed, at least twice a year. It is also important that you do a thorough job at home cleaning your teeth twice daily (that means flossing too!). Routine home care should seem more purposeful now that you understand the health implications involved.

Saving Teeth Means Protecting Gums
Want to hear an amazing statistic? Potentially 90% of adults between ages 33 and 45 have some form of gum disease, according to the American Dental Association. Gum disease is responsible for up to 70% of adult tooth loss, and it does not give clear warning signs that an untrained eye would notice. Unfortunately, it is a silent disease, in that you may not detect any symptoms, until it is in its advanced stages.
A dentist or hygienist must do a thorough and complete examination to detect it for you, especially in it’s early stages.
